A hymn for Candlemass

A setting of the words of the Nunc Dimittis and the story of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple from Luke chapter 2, to the tune of “Aurelia”, often used for the hymn “The Church’s one Foundation”.

Lord, Lettest thou thy servant
Depart his way in peace.
Your promise is fulfilled that
your grace will never cease.
Your word has been accomplished;
Our hearts are filled with joy.
As here, in your own temple,
We greet this baby boy.

My eyes have seen salvation
Prepared for all to see.
The presence of a Saviour
Now come to set us free.
The promise of Messiah,
Now here before our eyes,
Wrapped in a tiny infant
Reveals God’s great surprise.

A light unto the Gentiles
To shine for all to see
And Israel’s only glory
To set your people free.
My arms enfold my Saviour,
My voice, his praise proclaims,
My heart is His forever,
And Jesus is His name.
